CCA was created following several years of informal gatherings of officers of various communication associations to discuss common concerns and issues in the field. Plans for a new organization of communication associations/societies began in earnest during a meeting in August 1995. Following two planning meetings, a Constitution was formally adopted in August 1996. The first meeting of the Board of Directors took place in January 1997.
